If you have a baby then a pushchair or pram is a must. It is going to be with you for a long time too, especially if you have more than one baby so it makes sense that you should think about all the different alternatives there are. Below I’ve listed some of things you need to consider that you might not have thought of…

Your Lifestyle: Depending on how you travel the most should be considered when buying a pushchair or pram… If you drive a lot you need to make sure the pram will fold down easily to fit into the car’s trunk. If you walk a lot, then ensure good suspension, maneuverability and stability. If you are heavily dependent on public transport then make sure you choose a lightweight model and are comfortable with how quickly and easily the pushchair can fold down.

Space: You will need to ensure that the pushchair or pram will be able to fit into the spaces you will need it to – standard size doorways, back seat of a car, baggage holder in a bus or train, etc.

Weight: Think about how much lifting you’ll need to do with the pram. Do you regularly have to climb stairs? If you will be lifting the pram a lot you’ll obviously want to look at a lightweight model.

Your Height: A lot of people forget to make sure that the pushchair or pram will be comfortable for them, they only think about the baby. However, you should consider the height of everyone who will be pushing the pram – if the Dad is really tall you wouldn’t want him bending over as he pushes as he’ll get a bad back!

Wheel Type: Unless you need the additional stability offered by the fixed-position, oversize wheels found on joggers and larger prams, fully independent wheels are recommended.

Portability: Many parents have two pushchair or prams for various needs. A full-size pushchair or pram is great for longer, bumpier rides, while the ultracompact umbrella fits everywhere from trunks to overhead bins on planes. If you buy only one pushchair or pram, keep portability at the top of your list.

Other features: There are a lot of funky features out there to help parents save time or frustration. There’s pushchairs that have a one hand fold down feature, others have interesting storage solutions, others have all terrain wheels. Just look at these and establish which ones you need.

Budget: It is possible to find a great pushchair or pram without spending a fortune. (It is also possible to find subpar pushchair or prams at sky-high prices.) However, more often than not, you get what you pay for. Think carefully about the features you need and then narrow by budget. Your purchase could potentially last from your child’s infancy well through the toddler years, so investing in a quality pushchair or pram may be more economical in the long run.
